TEACHER TIPS 2 – Investigating erosion

Back to Te Māra a Tāne

Soil erosion from our farm land results in a staggering 200-300 million tonnes of soil being lost to the ocean every year – the ecological and economic impact is huge.

This Teacher Tip provides some ideas from a variety of websites for your classroom erosion investigations. Experiments can demonstrate how factors such as water, plant cover, soil composition and slope impact on erosion.

Sand, a sloping tray and some water can be used to show features of erosion.
A great way to demonstrate how roots reduce the effects of erosion

This tip also provides links to background information including the recent report by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on Water Quality in New Zealand.
